Commemoration Message for The International Holocaust Remembrance Day
January 27, 2019 – As we commemorate International Holocaust Remembrance Day, we recognize one of the darkest times in our world’s history. The systematic persecution and execution of people of Jewish faith—along with other minority groups—by the Nazi regime is a horror we hope is never repeated.
Still, there remain significant challenges in our world today with regard to upholding basic human rights and freedoms, and the deliberate targeting and scapegoating of minority groups. While the Holocaust was a unique dark episode in history, we have witnessed far too many massacres since then, from Bosnia to Rwanda and from Syria to Myanmar, to suggest that humanity as a collective has yet to learn and internalize the lesson taught by the Holocaust. Let us use this occasion to rededicate ourselves to rectifying these challenges and preventing them from sliding into a repeat of past atrocity.
