AFSV World Refugee Day Message
June 20, 2022– Today, on World Refugee Day, the Alliance for Shared Values stands in solidarity with those around the world who have been forced to flee their homes to escape conflict or persecution. This year’s focus, in particular, is on the right to seek safety.
Over the last six years, countless Hizmet participants in Turkey have fled the country in order to seek safety from an authoritarian regime intent on persecuting them for affiliating with the Hizmet movement. Turkey’s Erdogan government has perpetrated gross violations of human rights on its own citizens and, as a result, many Turkish citizens had to flee to find safety in other countries.
We are grateful for those in receiving countries who have welcomed refugees with open arms, helped them get settled and taught them the laws and customs of the new country. Refugees deserve a safe place to live and to pursue a better life for themselves, and these helpers are doing the noble work of ensuring that all people are treated equally, no matter their country of origin.
