Message of Condemnation and Condolences for Shooting at San Diego Mosque

May 19 2016– We are deeply saddened by the horrific shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego in which two teenagers shot and killed three members of the Muslim community. We strongly condemn this attack and the hatemongering that appears to have influenced the attackers. According to local law enforcement officials, the attack could have resulted in more deaths if not for the brave intervention of the security officer who was among those who lost their lives. We extend our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims. May God the Most Merciful bless them with His mercy in their afterlife.

Beyond the devastating loss of life, this attack constitutes a grave assault on the fundamental human rights to security, freedom, and the peaceful exercise of religion.

The fact that the attack was carried out by two teenagers, who reportedly committed suicide after the attack, adds to our pain. Young people who are at the beginning of their lives should have hope for their future and opportunities for developing friendships with people of diverse religious and ethnic backgrounds.

In this painful moment, we stand together with American Muslims and all Americans in urging calm and a renewed commitment to protecting religious freedom. We must work to ensure the safety of every community and nurture our youth with hope and an inclusive mindset rather than fear and hate.
